At the core of the Formulator is a patent-pending microfluidic chip that can measure and dispense discrete volumes of liquid. The chip has 96 outputs each with its own microfluidic valve cluster. Each valve cluster has two micro-diaphragms (200nL and 2.5µL) that can fill and dispense as fast as 3 times per second. Combining multiple dispenses of each micro-diaphragm allows any volume down to 200nL to be dispensed with a resolution of 200nL.
The Formulator's positive displacement micro-diaphragms handle viscous and non-viscous liquids with ease and precision. No complicated programming is required. Simply select from four viscosity settings (normal, medium, high, and very high) to define the liquid class of your reagents. At a higher viscosity setting, the Formulator simply allows more time for the diaphragms to fill. Overestimating the viscosity of an ingredient will have no effect on dispense precision.
Adding a stock ingredient to the Formulator is fast and easy: just scan the ingredient barcode, turn the bottle upside down, and place it in any of the ingredient inputs on the top of the system. Bottle sensors tell the Formulator where you placed that ingredient. Switching stock ingredients is also easy: simply ask the Formulator to wash the supply line and pick the bottle up. This ease of use is achieved using a specially designed lid insert with integrated check valves to facilitate washing. The Formulator currently supports 125mL and 250mL Nalgene Bottles and 50mL Falcon tubes (others available upon request).
There are two ingredient configurations, both identical in size.
